The Australian Geoscience Council provides a forum for representatives of geoscientific societies and organisations to cooperate and to encourage the development of the geosciences in Australia.

The geosciences are critical for Australia.  The mineral and petroleum industries are the main export earners and underpin our wealth creation.  The geosciences are needed to discover develop and manage these resources. Our future proposperity will depend upon on these industries remaining healthy, innovative, competitive and environmentally sustainable.

We are faced with huge challenges in respect of land degradation, deteriorating water quality across the whole continent, coastal development and management, the impact of natural hazards and the management of Australia's marine jurisdiction. These issues require input fom the geosciences.  We must aim to ensure that our environmental management practices and the development of the built environment  will enable productive and profitable uses whilst sustaining our natural environment.

The objective of the Australian Geoscience Council  is to represent the broad range of geoscience professions in order to

  • Provide expert apolitical advice to governments matters invlving the geosciences and their aplication:
  • Promote the development of scientifically sound policies for education and research; and
  • Provide the Australian public with a greater appreciation of the economic, environmental and cultural values of the geosciences.
